How nuclear, renewables, and demand growth are reshaping the UK energy system by Axis

Today marks a major moment for the UK’s nuclear ambitions. The government has selected Wylfa on Anglesey as the site for the UK’s first Small Modular Reactor.

Through our work on nuclear enrichment and wide-ranging energy infrastructure projects, Axis is growing its capability to support future SMR and new nuclear development as opportunities arise. Our nuclear sector team has experience in the planning and environmental disciplines that underpin major nuclear development, including site selection, consenting strategy, and environmental assessment.

As the UK accelerates both new supply and rapidly growing forms of demand, the challenge is no longer about any single technology but about how all components of the energy system coexist. SMRs, large-scale solar, wind, BESS, hydrogen production and major grid reinforcements each place different demands on land, networks and consenting pathways. Their success depends on coordinated planning, timely grid capacity and a clear understanding of how projects interact geographically and cumulatively. The ability to balance these pressures will shape the next decade of energy delivery, just as much as the technologies themselves.

Alongside our nuclear work, Axis continues to support a broad portfolio of renewable and low-carbon projects, from DCO-scale solar and wind to BESS, hydrogen and carbon capture.

If you are progressing new nuclear development, SMR deployment or indeed any major energy infrastructure, we would welcome a conversation.
