Axis let me bring my environmental qualifications into planning - and now I’m Chartered!

Jon's Journey

Jon Maginness describes how the guidance and mentorship he’s received at Axis has enabled him to flourish.

Hi Jon, tell us a bit about your background.
My university education was focused on science and the environment – protecting biodiversity and sustainable management of the environment is a passion of mine. I completed my Undergraduate Degree at The University of Nottingham in Environmental Biology. I then did my Masters at Manchester in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management (EIAM).

So how did you end up in planning?
I was approached by someone in the planning industry whilst working on a Neighbourhood Plan for my local area – I think they’d recognised my potential. For nearly three years I worked for various other North West planning consultancies, however I never felt that the work I was doing allowed me to utilise my environmental background.

Then I found Axis, and Axis was the first company I’d worked for that leveraged my knowledge and passion for the environment, and let me bring those qualifications into my planning role. Something I massively appreciated.

So you’re now applying your environmental expertise to planning projects here at Axis?
Yes that’s right. I’ve been at Axis for almost four years now and I’m doing just that. I support Director Nick Roberts on Energy from Waste facilities and have branched out into battery storage projects for Director Phillip Roden. You get exposure to a wide variety of projects at Axis, which keeps the work interesting. I’ve taken on a lot of responsibility for key clients with multiple sites which is really challenging and fun. Axis is great for letting you run with your own work.

What do you love most about your job?
I love working in the energy sector and helping to deliver positive, sustainable developments that help tackle climate change and drive us all closer towards Net Zero. Axis’ mission is to build sustainable futures and this really aligns with my belief system..

You’ve recently become a Chartered Town Planner MRTPI, haven’t you? Yep! I’ve been working towards this for a while (opting to go through the experienced practitioner route) and am pleased to get the recognition for my expertise and professional practice. It’s nice to get the credit that comes with attaining Chartership.

Anything else to add?
Yeah, I’d like to give a big shout out to my mentor Martin Pollard, Technical Director in the Wilmslow office, for supporting and guiding me through the process of applying for the Chartered Town Planner MRTPI qualification. His help has been invaluable. Thanks!
