Strategic planning support for the UK’s nuclear future

Nuclear Uranium Enrichment Facility

Axis has more than two decades of experience delivering expert planning and environmental services to the nuclear enrichment sector – a vital part of the UK’s civil nuclear fuel cycle. Our work supports the development of facilities that increase the concentration of uranium-235 (U-235) in natural uranium, making it suitable for use as fuel in nuclear reactors.

As the UK transitions toward net zero, nuclear power is playing an increasingly pivotal role. Today, around 15% of the country’s electricity is generated by approximately 6.5 GW of nuclear capacity. With much of this due to be retired by the end of the decade, a new generation of nuclear infrastructure is being developed to support the government’s ambition to achieve 24 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050.

To meet this goal, the UK is backing large-scale projects such as Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, as well as investing in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs). Uranium enrichment – the process that enables these reactors to operate – is central to these ambitions.

A trusted partner in nuclear enrichment development

Nuclear Uranium Enrichment Facility

Axis has been appointed as a specialist planning advisor for the development of Europe’s first advanced nuclear enrichment facility in the UK – a nationally important infrastructure project that represents a key step in domestic nuclear capability.

Our team is playing a pivotal role in navigating the planning process for this cutting-edge facility, working collaboratively with engineers, developers, and regulatory stakeholders to align the project with environmental, technical, and legislative requirements.

This appointment reflects our strong track record of delivering complex infrastructure schemes in sensitive and regulated environments, and underscores our contribution to the UK’s long-term energy security.

“We’re delighted our expertise has been recognised by this company, which has appointed Axis as its specialist planning and transportation advisor for its future flagship development plans, including this new enrichment facility.”
