As the UK transitions toward net zero, nuclear power is playing an increasingly pivotal role. Today, around 15% of the country’s electricity is generated by approximately 6.5 GW of nuclear capacity. With much of this due to be retired by the end of the decade, a new generation of nuclear infrastructure is being developed to support the government’s ambition to achieve 24 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050.
To meet this goal, the UK is backing large-scale projects such as Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, as well as investing in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs). Uranium enrichment – the process that enables these reactors to operate – is central to these ambitions.
Axis has been appointed as a specialist planning advisor for the development of Europe’s first advanced nuclear enrichment facility in the UK – a nationally important infrastructure project that represents a key step in domestic nuclear capability.
