We’re delighted to have secured planning permission for a Battery Storage Facility within Barnet’s Green Belt, following a successful appeal. The facility will store power from the National Grid at times of excess supply and feed this back into the grid at times of high demand.

The Appeal Decision carefully considered the development’s impacts on the green belt and found that the wider environmental benefits of the scheme (in respect of its support for renewable energy) outweighed the harm to the green belt and any other harm. The report also confirmed whilst the proposal itself is not a renewable energy project per se, it would provide enhanced energy resilience in the National Grid at a key strategic location. The development is a battery storage facility including inverter and transformer stations, battery storage containers, other associated infrastructure works, security fencing and lighting.

Said Phillip Roden, project lead and Director here at Axis “There is a national need for energy storage facilities to ensure energy security and help us get to a net zero economy. So we’re delighted planning permission has been granted. The development will help the National Grid to respond to “increasing fluctuations in generation” caused by the greater use of renewable energy sources and will support the aims of meeting the UK’s net zero carbon emissions commitments and the climate emergency.”
