Transformational work is nearing completion at the Riverstone Bridge Flood Defence Works, part of VolkerStevin’s build phase 1A Flood Defence works in Littleborough and Rochdale.
The towns have a long history of flooding with significant events recorded from 1991 onwards, and ‘The River Roch, Rochdale & Littleborough Flood Risk Management Scheme’ is addressing the high level of flood risk to the towns of Rochdale and Littleborough in Greater Manchester, led by the Environment Agency.
The steep catchment and multiple tributaries cause the River Roch to respond rapidly to rainfall with river levels rising quickly. The urbanised river valley has an industrial heritage with a legacy of modified channels, bridges, culverts and weirs which further exacerbate the flooding problem.
Lead Consultant at Axis, Nicola Greenwood said, “As the planning consultants and landscape architects, Axis has been involved in the scheme from the early stages of this exciting development. We are so pleased to be seeing the works on the ground start benefiting the community. Work is still progressing on subsequent phases of the project.”
